AUSTIN, Texas, August 15, 2013  — The University of Texas at Austin and LBJ School communities mourn the loss of former acting university president William S. Livingston, who died this morning.  He was 93.


“Bill Livingston embodied all the best qualities of a university leader: erudition, eloquence, sweeping vision, warmth and good humor,” said University President Bill Powers. “The University of Texas is a better place for his lifetime of service.  He was an inspiration to generations of Longhorns, and we all will miss him.”

LBJ Library Vietnam Dog Tags Personally Escorted to San Antonio Motorcycle cavalcade brings them to join the Texas Vietnam Heroes Exhibit.

Vietnam veterans' dog tags, housed in Austin's LBJ Library, were gently escorted to San Antonio, courtesy of volunteers from The Patriot Guard Riders, Combat and In Country Veterans ...all on motorcycles. Organizer Brian Archimbaud says the tags will join the Texas Vietnam Heroes Exhibit at the Institute of Texan Cultures opening August 3rd.

AUSTIN, Texas – Robert L. Hardesty, whose career included key positions with President Lyndon B. Johnson, Speaker of the House Carl Albert and Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe – and who later became a university president and the highest ranking official of the U. S. Postal Service – died July 8, 2013, in Austin, Texas. He was 82-years old. Cause of death was congestive heart failure, according to his wife Alice.

AUSTIN, TX. – The LBJ Foundation has named Amy Barbee as its Executive Director, effective August 5, 2013. She assumes this role following Mary Herman, who retired from the position in June. Most recently, Barbee served as Executive Director of the non-profit Texas Cultural Trust.

The LBJ Presidential Library mourns the death of Ted Gittinger, a treasured member of the staff whose work and leadership is still felt today.

Gittinger was a staff historian at the Library from the early 1970s until his retirement in 2004. He conducted oral histories, assisted researchers, produced the Library’s newsletter, and presented countless programs to visitors about the valuable archival resources at the Library. For many years, Gittinger coordinated submissions and the awarding of the D. B. Hardeman prize to the author of the best book on the U. S. Congress that year.

This Sunday’s PARADE features an exclusive interview with the former first couple, George W. and Laura Bush. After staying mostly out of sight since 2009, the couple, both 66, are back in the spotlight this week with the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, part of the larger Bush Presidential Center, which also includes the Bush Institute, a public policy initiative focused on the issues the president remains passionate about. They spoke with PARADE contributor Mark Updegrove.
