Destiny of Democracy: The Civil Rights Summit at the LBJ Presidential Library
February 13, 2015 -- The Presidential Leadership Scholars program, a unique leadership development initiative that draws upon the resources of the presidential centers of Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton, and George W. Bush, today announced the 60 scholars invited to participate in the program’s inaugural class.
In honor of Black History Month, a new exhibit by UT Austin’s Briscoe Center and the LBJ Presidential Library celebrates the 50th anniversaries of the civil rights marches in Selma, Alabama, and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
March to Freedom features rare photographs of the "Bloody Sunday" Selma-to-Montgomery march (March 7, 1965), documents, quotes and images that celebrate subsequent marches, and photos from the LBJ Library’s 2014 Civil Rights Summit.

Paramount Pictures recent release "Selma" depicts the brave campaign for voting rights, led by Martin Luther King, Jr. and waged in Alabama, a half a century ago.
In telling the story, the film portrays the relationship between Dr. King and President Johnson, suggesting that the two men were largely at odds over the effort in Selma. In fact, Dr. King and President Johnson were in accord over the need for voting rights.
The film Selma focuses on efforts to pass the Voting Rights Act, signed into law by President Johnson 50 years ago. To learn more about the productive partnership between President Johnson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Library has posted audio, video, and photos from that time in 1965.
