We Remember President Lyndon B. Johnson's Birthday on August 27th

This year, there are two celebrations on what would be Johnson's 114th birthday.

(AUSTIN-TX) – On August 27th, join us as we celebrate LBJ's birthday at the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum and the grand opening of the new Austin PBS studios at Highland Mall.

LBJ Library:

  • Enjoy free admission at the LBJ Presidential Library from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There's free parking, free birthday cupcakes, crafts, and lots of cool air conditioning.

Explore our two temporary exhibits:

Lady Bird: Beyond the Wildflowers

The former first lady is often associated with promoting environmental conservation and the wildflowers that brighten the country's landscape. This exhibit adds to that legacy by guiding visitors through a comprehensive story of Mrs. Johnson's life featuring letters, photographs, clothing, and artifacts that the public will see for the first time. Lady Bird: Beyond the Wildflowers gives visitors more context to Mrs. Johnson's education, family, campaign efforts, work as a businesswoman, and her role as a philanthropist.

Yoichi Okamoto

As one of the White House photographers during the Johnson presidency, Yoichi "Oke" Okamoto (1915-1985) asked for and was given unlimited access to the president and often spent 16 hours a day with his workaholic boss. That unfettered access allowed Okamoto, who usually had four cameras around his neck, to focus on capturing behind-the-scenes, spontaneous moments and traditional events. Enjoy these candid photos from the Johnson administration.

Austin PBS:

10 a.m. – 6 p.m.: Visit us at the new Austin Media Center at Highland Mall.

You can build a puppet inspired by LBJ's public broadcasting legacy at our booth, get a cupcake, and a free memento. In 1967, President Johnson signed the law creating the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, establishing PBS and NPR. At the signing ceremony, he said, "Today, we rededicate part of the airwaves for the enlightenment of the people."

3:00 p.m.: Luci Baines Johnson, LBJ’s daughter, will participate in Storytime in Studio 6A.

Join us on August 27 as we celebrate LBJ's birthday, Austin PBS, and reaffirm our commitment to public broadcasting.

Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in Stonewall, Texas. The 36th president of the United States died in 1973 and is buried at the LBJ Ranch near his birthplace.
