The Federal Bar Association, New Orleans Chapter, is pleased to present a panel discussion reviewing the historical context of the law, where we are today, and the future of the Civil Rights Act and Criminal Justice Act on June 5, 2014.

The Penn State College of Education will host the interdisciplinary conference Education and Civil Rights, Historical Legacies, Contemporary Strategies and Promise for the Future, along with a related graduate student symposium, on June 6 and 7, 2014. 

The Mystic Valley Area branch of the NAACP will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 at the annual Freedom Fund Breakfast on Saturday, June 7, 2014.

Miami University will recognize the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer with a commemoration ceremony, tree dedication, reception and a historical display on June 20, 2014.

Freedom Summer Conference set for June 19-21 at the University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Black Studies.

The 50th anniversary of the Mississippi Freedom Summer will be celebrated in Jackson to celebrate the “civil rights workers and summer volunteers who successfully challenged the denial by the state of Mississippi to keep black people from voting, getting a decent education and holding elected offices.” It will take place June 25 – 29, 2014.

Senator Elizabeth Warren will welcome Convention participants to Boston from Capitol Hill to celebrate the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on June 26, 2014. 

The U.S. Conference of Mayors has voted to observe July 2, 2014, with appropriate attention and ceremony as the 50th anniversary of the day when the United States of America became a better country in which to live, for all of its people.

The U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C., has invited 50 students from across the country to participate in a program that begins in the nation’s capital and goes by bus to Richmond, Virginia and back. The students will learn about the Freedom Rides and meet officials upholding the cause of civil rights.

The LBJ Museum in San Marcos, Texas, is hosting a reception from 6 – 7 p.m. commemorating the anniversary.

The LBJ National Historical Park in Johnson City, Texas, is hosting a free open house “Remembering 1964- A Year That Changed America.”  Visitors will experience a new exhibit on the Civil Rights Act and there are screenings of the PBS documentary “1964” that day.

The US Mint has created a silver dollar to commemorate the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A surcharge of $10 per coin will benefit the United Negro College Fund.
