On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, Jake Tapper joined Friends of the LBJ Library members to speak in conversation with Mark K. Updegrove, president and CEO of the LBJ Foundation, about his debut political thriller, The Hellfire Club.

About the Author
CNN anchor and Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper joined the network in January 2013. The Lead with Jake Tapper, his one-hour weekday program, debuted in March 2013. Tapper was named host of the network's Sunday morning show, State of the Union, in June 2015. He has been a widely respected reporter in the nation's capital for more than 14 years. His previous book, The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor, debuted in the top 10 on the New York Times bestsellers list.

About the Book
Tapper's protagonist, Charlie Marder, isn't your typical politician. A decorated war veteran turned academic, he has a strong moral compass and considers himself to be a man of his word. Thrust into the unlikely position of congressman, he is written off by his colleagues as naive and uninformed. He struggles to find his footing in the underbelly of DC, where deals are made not just on Capitol Hill but at glamorous Georgetown townhomes, at secret society meetings, and in backroom negotiations. A mysterious fatal car accident finds the reluctant congressman at the center of a conspiracy theory that reaches the highest offices of the government. Charlie will not only have to fight to save his marriage, his principles, and his newfound career-but also for his life.

Set in 1950s Washington, DC, figures such as John F. Kennedy, Senator Joe McCarthy, President Eisenhower, and Lyndon Johnson appear as key characters in the novel.
