Friends, Foes, & Frenemies

Join Monticello, the Adams Presidential Center, and the Lyndon Johnson Presidential Library at LBJ Library on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 11:30 am - 7:30 pm for a unique professional development opportunity that examines the complexity of navigating political relationships in Revolutionary history and modern history.

Friends, Foes, & Frenemies will explore the complicated relationships between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson - going from allies in 1776 to bitter political rivals and friends again in retirement - as well as the well-known relationship between President Johnson and Martin, Luther King, Jr. - allies in the fight for civil rights but standing in opposition about the conflict in Vietnam. We will also consider how analyzing relationships like these can inspire students to engage in civil discourse. Teachers will leave with strategies and resources to implement immediately in the classroom. The day of learning ends with participation in the public event "Founding Friends, Founding Foes" hosted by Dr. Jane Kamensky and Kurt Graham, co-hosted by the LBJ Library, Adams Center, and Monticello in the LBJ Library Atrium.

Details:

• This workshop is free and open to all educators, but registration is required
• A $100 substitute teacher subsidy will be provided to each attendee's institution/school
• Dinner will be provided
• A certificate for 8 CPE hours will be given to participants in attendance.
