Ebola! Are We Really Prepared?
What have we learned from the Ebola crisis? Is Austin ready to respond to this and other infectious diseases? The Future Forum Public Policy Cluster is hosting a moderated discussion featuring:
- Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins;
- Travis County Judge-Elect Sarah Eckhardt;
- Dr. Philip Huang, Medical Director and Health Authority for the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department;
- Lynda Watkins, MPH, BSN, RN, CIC, Seton's top infection preventionist; and
- Tony Marquardt, Executive Director, Austin/Travis County EMS Association
to discuss the issues:
- What can we learn from our experiences in Dallas?
- Have we overreacted to this "crisis"?
- Have we reacted enough to stop this outbreak in West Africa?
- If Ebola can only survive at room temperature for a few hours, then why do HazMat teams show up in full protective gear to decontaminate an apartment days later?
- If we should worry more about measles or other diseases, then why aren't we isolating measles patients?
- How do we balance appropriate responses based upon science and evidence against fear, politics and the "optics" of this situation?
