Social Justice: On the Field and In the Classroom

Educators are invited to a three-day institute at the LBJ Presidential Library. We will examine the relationship between organized sports, education, and the ongoing fight for social justice in American society. Through lectures and conversations with experts in the fields of education, sociology, sports, history, and law, educators will also have the opportunity to explore social justice movements as it relates to their curriculum and their students' lives.

The institute is presented in conjunction with the LBJ Library's special exhibition, Get in the Game: The Fight for Equality in American Sports. The exhibition celebrates athletes who have broken barriers and spoken out for equality, both on and off the playing field. Beginning in the late 19th century and continuing through current day, Get in the Game encourages visitors to think about sports as part of an ongoing national conversation and as a vehicle for social change.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. Teachers will receive CPE credit and classroom resources from the LBJ Library. A laptop or other device is not required, but could be helpful for note taking or following along during the primary resource discussion.

How to Attend

• The institute is only open to current educators.
• The cost to attend is $75 per person.
• Complete our online registration form.
• After your registration form is filled, you will be sent a link to pay the $75 registration fee. Your registration is not complete until the registration fee has been paid.

Scholarships
The scholarships have been awarded. Thank you for your interest! 

Scholarship Requirements

• You must be registered, with your registration fee already paid, before applying.
• You must be a current classroom teacher from an underserved or economically disadvantaged school, falling into one of the following categories:
  • Rural
  • Title I
  • Over 50% free and reduced lunch
• You must live more than 75 miles away from the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.
• You must provide a letter of recommendation from a department chair or principal.
• You must complete all required fields in the scholarship application form.

Accommodations
Attendees are encouraged to take advantage of a special $170 per night room rate at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Austin - University Area, located at 1617 North Interstate 35 and a short five-minute drive from the library.
