March 1968 was a month of significant upheaval and change, marked by fierce battles, shifting strategies, and growing domestic dissent. This exhibition delves into these transformative events, presenting an authentic and powerful narrative of those who lived through them.
Outside the entrance to the Vietnam War temporary exhibition, visitors will see a new permanent addition to the LBJ Presidential Library’s museum exhibits. Originally known as Panel 44, this granite slab is one of 146 panels etched in the early 1980s as part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Set aside due to a small imperfection in the upper right corner; a replacement was created and installed. The LBJ Library acquired this unique artifact for permanent display thanks to the generosity of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. The panel lists names of 335 service members who were killed or missing in action between March 9 and March 16, 1968, one of the bloodiest periods of the war. These individuals came from 44 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. They ranged in age from 19 to 47 and represented all branches of military service.
