The Driskill and the Johnsons
In September 1934, on a trip home to Texas, LBJ had his first date with Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor at The Driskill. LBJ proposed to Lady Bird that very day. Stunned, she did not give him an immediate answer and he returned to Washington, D.C. shortly after.

In the 10 weeks they were apart, they would go on to exchange nearly 90 letters during their whirlwind courtship. They married at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas on Nov. 17, 1934.

The couple revisited the hotel dozens of times during their life together. The Driskill was LBJ's campaign headquarters during his 1948 Senate race, and was a favorite place on return trips to Austin during his presidency. In November 1948, 1960, and 1964, the Johnsons also gathered with friends and supporters at The Driskill to watch the election returns.
