In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 signed by President Lyndon Johnson, the LBJ Presidential Library presented a discussion on immigration: how it shapes our country, influences the American economy, and the important immigration issues we face today.
Our panelists included Tom Gjelten, Bill Hammond, and Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco Soto. The evening was co-sponsored by FWD.us, the Center for Mexican American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, and the Indian American Coalition of Texas and is generously presented by AT&T.
Tom Gjelten has been a correspondent at NPR for over 30 years and regularly appears on the PBS program Washington Week. His new book A Nation of Nations: A Great American Immigration Story, will be released by Simon & Schuster on Sept. 15. A former state representative and member of the Texas Workforce Commission, Bill Hammond is now the CEO of the Texas Association of Business. Moderating the discussion will be Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco Soto, a professor and outreach director for the Center for Mexican American Studies, a political analyst for Telemundo, and a contributor to MSNBC and NBCNews.com.
