On Wednesday, March 7, 2018, Joseph Califano, Jr. sat in conversation with Bob Schieffer to discuss his new book, Our Damaged Democracy: We the People Must Act.

In the book, Califano explores the changes–political, cultural, constitutional, technological, institutional–that cripple our government and the urgent need to fix our democracy. The book includes anecdotes and examples featuring every modern president and actions of both parties. Related reviews:

About
Joseph A. Califano, Jr. spent 30 years in Washington at the top of the Pentagon, on the White House staff as chief domestic advisor to the President, and in the Cabinet. He worked as an attorney for The Washington Post during Watergate and has represented clients as varied as the Black Panthers and Coca Cola. He also spent years on Wall Street and served on more than 15 public company boards and numerous not-for-profit boards. He is the founder of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA). He has written 14 books, including Our Damaged Democracy.

Bob Schieffer reported for CBS News for 46 years, serving as anchor of Face the Nation, CBS News’ Sunday morning public affairs broadcast, for the last 24 of those years. He is also the author of five books, most recently Overload: Finding the Truth in Today’s Deluge of News.
