The LBJ Presidential Library mourns the death of Ted Gittinger, a treasured member of the staff whose work and leadership is still felt today.
Gittinger was a staff historian at the Library from the early 1970s until his retirement in 2004. He conducted oral histories, assisted researchers, produced the Library’s newsletter, and presented countless programs to visitors about the valuable archival resources at the Library. For many years, Gittinger coordinated submissions and the awarding of the D. B. Hardeman prize to the author of the best book on the U. S. Congress that year.
Gittinger was a Vietnam veteran and made his last public appearance at the Library as one of many who read the names of the men who died in that War, part of an exhibit at the Library. He served in the 1st Batallion, 21st Artillery of the 1st Cavalry Division from July 1966 to July 1967.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, from 6 – 7 p.m., at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 126 W. Oltorf, in Austin, Texas. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m.
