Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson would have celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary this week.

The couple never had a cake when they married back in 1934, so their family made up for it Monday.

Nicole Covert, the Johnson's granddaughter, cut a three-tier cake and served it to guests at the LBJ Library Monday afternoon. The Driskill Hotel helped celebrate by supplying the cake. Covert said her grandparents would have enjoyed the Driskill having a hand in the celebration.

“Election results were always seen down there and that was always their headquarters, so to have the Driskill in collaboration with the LBJ Library is really special to us," Covert said.

In September of 1934, the Johnsons had their first date at the historic Driskill. Just about a month later, they married in San Antonio.

They were together for 39 years.
