Happy holiday season to our members and friends! In this time of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for all of you.

As you can see from the upcoming events section below, there are lots of great events and opportunities on the horizon. The Future Forum Re-gift Party is back by popular demand. Stay tuned for more information soon. In the meantime, be on the lookout for that perfect re-gift. In February, we will discuss Obama's first year in office - and introduce you all to our new Director, Mark Updegrove. And, we have a number of film opportunities coming up - the film cluster viewing of One Peace at a Time (or check out the event on December 4 and support the project), or an opportunity to see a sneak preview of a film.

Upcoming Events

See What We Have in Store

The Future Forum is busy planning events into the New Year:

Stay tuned for a date for our annual re-gift party in January.

On January 20, Future Forum members are invited to Behind the Lens: White House Photography from LBJ to Obama, featuring the White House photographers from the administrations of Presidents Ford, George H. W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush. This special evening event will be held in the LBJ Auditorium. Ticket information to come.

Please also save the date of February 17 for a program by new Library Director Mark Updegrove. He will be speaking on his book Baptism By Fire: Eight Presidents Who Took Office in Times of Crisis and discussing President Obama's first year in office in celebration of Presidents' Day.

Also, Future Forum members are invited to a free screening of It's Complicated featuring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin in a comedy about love, divorce, and everything in between. The screenings will be held in north Austin on December 9, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. and in south Austin on December 10, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. To respond, please email [email protected] with the subject line "FUTURE FORUM FREE MOVIE-AUSTIN" and the following information included: date preference, first and last name, and number of seats you request. You will receive an email with the details including the theatre name & address and what time we will start checking in to the theatre by Friday, December 4.

Cluster Activity

On December 7, the Film Cluster will meet to see One Peace at a Time, Turk Pipkin's new film, at the Regal Arbor. Showtime is to be announced. The film is the latest from the Nobelity Project, which Pipkin discussed with the Future Forum in November 2007. For more information on the film, please visit One Peace at a Time. The Book Club has chosen it's next book, Baptism by Fire: Eight Presidents Who Took Office in Times of Crisis, penned by new LBJ Library Director, Mark Updegrove. We don't have a date yet forour next meeting, but we're aiming for the last week of January or the first week of February and wanted to give you a heads up so you can get started with your reading. We will also be re-launching the Public Policy Group soon, so get ready!

The New Age of Journalism

On November 9, we hosted two of Austin's most important journalistic voices in conversation on their craft. Evan Smith, CEO and Editor in Chief of the Texas Tribune, and Fred Zipp, Editor of the Austin American-Statesman, discussed the trends in traditional and digital media, including some surprising takes on what the future has in store.

Join a committe and become more involved in the Future Forum! In addition to our regular events and clusters, we now have two volunteer committees for those that are willing and able to help. The membership committee will focus on marketing, recruiting new members, and assisting current members. The events committee is looking for volunteers to help greet, check in members and guests, and assist our speakers at events. This group will also brainstorm new event ideas. Please contact Sarah McCracken if you are interested in joining a committee.

The LBJ Library and Museum is hiring and Assistant Education Specialist to assist with the creation and design of educational programs and curriculum! Please visit the Education webpage to read the full position description and download the application requirements.

School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents
Our modern Presidents received educations and participated in school activities in ways as diverse as their backgrounds and political philosophies. Through the records of the presidential libraries - archival material, museum objects, photographs, and audio-visual recordings - School House to White House gives visitors a new perspective on the presidency.

The exhibit, prepared by the National Archives and Records Administration, charts the educational experiences of our Presidents from Herbert Hoover to Bill Clinton. Visitors will learn which sports the presidents played, what kind of homework and grades the presidents were given, how classrooms were organized, and family involvement in their learning experiences. The exhibit closes on Presidents' Day, February 15, 2010.

December's Doers & Builders - The ARC of the Capital Area
The Arc of the Capital Area is committed to promoting independence and choice by providing individualized services to adults and children with developmental disabilities. The Arc of the Capital Area envisions a world where all people with disabilities and their families have the same opportunities as others to pursue full and productive lives.

Other Community Events

The Nobelity Project's partnership with Mahiga Primary School in rural Kenya has resulted in clean water, electricty, new classrooms and a computer lab. It's now the top-rated school in the district, educating 400 girls and boys from pre-school to grade 8. But education shouldn't end after the 8th Grade. With no high school in the area, we've pledged to build Mahiga Hope High School, a modern facility with eight classrooms, science labs, book and computer library, and the award-winning RainWater Court, an innovative multipurpose facility that also supplies purified drinking water. And we need your help.

We're looking for 1,000 donors who can help create true opportunity for these kids. Join the Choir with our first donors Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire of The Dixie Chicks. Be one of 1000 Voices for Hope! You can see the successes at Mahiga Primary School in our new feature documentary, One Peace at a Time, opening at Austin's Arbor Cinema on Friday, December 4, with more cities to follow. On December 4, there are two screenings and receptions-- a 5:30 p.m. reception with 7:30 p.m. screening, and a 7:30 p.m. reception with 9:00 p.m. screening. Tickets are $50. The LBJ Museum Store is offering tax free shopping on December 4 and 5. The 2009 LBJ Library and Museum keepsake ornament is in stock! This year, it commemorates the dedication of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum Plaza and the Lady Bird Johnson Center on November 13, 2009. Future Forum members get a 15% discount on all purchases!

On December 5, 12, and 19, everyone is invited to experience Christmas at the LBJ Boyhood Home. National Park Rangers will provide an open house of this historic home, all decked out for a Christmas celebration in the 1920s from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. each evening. These events are free of charge and are complemented by the stunning lighting display at the Pedernales Electric Cooperative, across the street from the LBJ Boyhood Home, with majestic live oaks resplendent in hundreds of thousands of tiny white lights.
