December 2012

Dec 03, 2012

On Wednesday, January 16, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Future Forum members will enjoy an after-hours reception and tour of the newly re-designed permanent exhibits of the LBJ Presidential Library.

The new exhibits will feature unique audiovisual components, including a handheld mobile device tour, unprecedented access to President Johnson's private phone conversations, an interactive Vietnam War exhibit where visitors experience elements of the President's decision-making process, and a story-telling animatronic LBJ. These state-of-the art exhibits will give visitors a contemporary experience relating to one of the most significant Presidents and eras in our country's history.

Join us for special after-hours access to the exhibits as we celebrate their opening!

Please email [email protected] if you plan to attend.

Don't want to wait until January 16?  Join us for the grand re-opening of the new exhibits on December 22.  See below for more details.

The Book Cluster will meet in February to discuss Sasha Issenberg's book The Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns.  Issenberg spoke to the Future Forum on October 24.  Email Hamilton Richards for more info or to be added to the book cluster list.

On November 15 the LBJ Library presented a one-day conference, The Enduring Legacies of America's First Ladies, featuring former First Ladies' staff members, First Family members, and presidential photographer David Hume Kennerly.  Over 800 people attended the afternoon and evening programs.

If you missed one of the panels or wish to share with a friend, the video of the First Families panel featuring Barbara Bush, Jenna Bush Hager, Steve Ford, and Lynda Johnson Robb and the  video of former First Ladies Mrs. Barbara Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush are now available online.  We have also posted a selection of photos from the afternoon and evening sessions.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas creates, finds and supports programs that directly improve the health and well being of children and their families.  We do this through the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room and other programs.

Join a cooking team, donate, or participate in the Lights of Love 5K and Family Run on December 7. Visit the Ronald McDonald House website to learn more or register.

Our major renovation is nearly complete!  The newly re-designed exhibits will open to the public on Mrs. Johnson's centennial birthday on Saturday, December 22.  Activities planned for that day include a ribbon-cutting ceremony; book-signings by Michael Gillette, Harry Middleton, and Mark Updegrove; musical performances by Sid Fly, Austin Children's Choir, and River City Pops; and a special pictorial cancellation of Mrs. Johnson's Forever Stamp.  Stop by to join in the excitement!  Members receive free admission.

More information on the public re-opening and a schedule for the day is available online.

As previously announced, the Library will charge admission for the first time in its 41-year history when the new exhibits open. This decision was made after thoughtful consideration by the LBJ Foundation Board and has the support of the Johnson family.  Click here for more information about admission fees and the many free holidays visitors can enjoy.  Members of the Future Forum will always enjoy free admission as a benefit of membership.
