December 2012

Grand re-opening festivities

The month we have been waiting for is finally here!

December will bring a series of events to celebrate the opening of our newly re-designed permanent exhibit.  I encourage you to join us on December 19 for a members' sneak preview before our grand re-opening to the public on December 22.  Come for one, come for both, but be sure to come and enjoy the state-of-the-art new exhibit celebrating the lives and legacies of President and Mrs. Johnson.

Happy holidays!

Mark Updegrove

Grand Re-Opening

Our major renovation is nearly complete!  The newly re-designed exhibits will open to the public on Saturday, December 22, Mrs. Johnson's centennial birthday.  Activities planned for that day include a ribbon-cutting ceremony; book-signings by Michael Gillette, Harry Middleton, Louann Temple, and Mark Updegrove; musical performances by Sid Fly, Austin Children's Choir, and River City Pops; and a special pictorial cancellation of Mrs. Johnson's new Forever Stamp.  Stop by to join in the excitement!

More information on the public re-opening and a schedule for the day is available online.

Friends Preview Reception

On Wednesday, December 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friends will have the opportunity to preview our newly re-designed permanent exhibits and enjoy an after-hours reception.  There will not be a formal program or tour.  Light hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served in the Great Hall, and The Store at LBJ will be open for holiday shopping.

A formal invitation will be mailed shortly.  Please email [email protected] or return the postcard enclosed with your invitation if you plan to attend.  This is a special opportunity to see the exhibits before they open to the public!

First Ladies Conference Photos and Video

On November 15 the LBJ Library presented The Enduring Legacies of America's First Ladies, a one-day conference featuring former First Ladies Mrs. Barbara Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush, former First Ladies' staff members, First Family members, and presidential photographer David Hume Kennerly.  Over 800 people attended the afternoon and evening programs.

If you missed one of the panels or wish to share with a friend, the video of the First Families panel and the evening presentation by former First Ladies Mrs. Barbara Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush are now available online.  We have also posted a selection of photos from the afternoon and evening sessions.
