August 2013

Tuesday, August 27 marks the 105th anniversary of LBJ's birth.  In celebration, I hope you'll join us for cake and refreshments in the Great Hall of the Library during our normal business hours, 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

Watch your mailbox for the fall edition of Among Friends, our newsletter for members. Our fall calendar will be enclosed. In the meantime, please save the date for our first Evening With of the season on Tuesday, September 3. That evening we'll look back at the events of September 11, 2001, with behind-the-scenes accounts from senior White House staff members Eric Draper, Karen Hughes, Clay Johnson, and Karl Rove.

Private screening of Lee Daniels' The Butler

On Thursday, August 15, the LBJ Library will partner with the Weinstein Company to offer an advance screening of Lee Daniels' The Butler, a new film inspired by the true story of a White House butler who served eight American presidents, including Lyndon Johnson, over three decades. The film traces the dramatic changes that swept American society during this time, from the civil rights movement to Vietnam and beyond, and how those changes affected this man's life and family.  Academy Award® nominated Lee Daniels directs and co-wrote the script with Emmy®-award winning Danny Strong.

The screening will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Regal Arbor Cinema (9828 Great Hills Trail, Austin, 78759). Tickets are $9.50 and may be purchased online through the LBJ Foundation.  Your ticket(s) will be available for pick-up from an LBJ Library representative at the theater starting at 6:00 p.m. that evening.  Click here for more details about the film and the screening.
