Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson's whirlwind courtship is legendary, but newly opened documents at the LBJ Library reveal that even as Lady Bird was dressing for her wedding, she contemplated "whether it would be wisest to jump out the window or go on and get married."

Mrs. Johnson comes to life as a vivid storyteller in 44 oral histories the library released as part of its 40th anniversary celebration this week. The transcripts, which total more than 1,400 pages, cover Mrs. Johnson's memories of her childhood in East Texas through the 1960 presidential campaign, when LBJ was elected vice president to John F. Kennedy.
