As a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, Senator Biden has played a pivotal role in the decision on the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U. S. Supreme Court. He voted against Alito’s nomination and has concluded that hearings before the Senate Committee may need to be scrapped, sending the vote on Supreme Court nominees directly to the full Senate. In addition, the Committee is holding hearings on the Bush Administration’s secret domestic surveillance operation, which was designed to combat terrorism.

As the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Biden is deeply involved in the policies regarding the wars in Iraq and against terror. He has visited Iraq six times; the most recent visit was in December 2005. Senator Biden has just returned from observing the Palestinian parliamentary elections where he met with former Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

As one of the leading figures in the Democratic Party, Senator Biden is weighing a bid for the Presidency in 2008.

A lawyer, Joe Biden, Jr. was elected to the U. S. Senate from Delaware in 1972 at the age of 29. Currently serving as co-chair of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, Senator Biden also wrote laws that created the nation’s “Drug Czar.” Senator Biden is well known for his knowledge of national drug policy, crime prevention, and constitutional law. In 1988, Senator Biden sought the Democratic Party’s nomination for president, but withdrew before the national convention was held.
