Mark K. Updegrove, LBJ Library Director, invites you to join Friends for An Evening With Dr. Thomas F. Staley, Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 6:00 p.m., LBJ Auditorium
Thomas F. Staley is Director of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin, where he is also Professor of English and holds The Harry Huntt Ransom Chair in Liberal Arts. Staley has written and spoken widely in the United States and Europe on literary subjects, libraries, the state of the humanities in contemporary culture, and the building of modern library collections. In his presentation at the Library, he will speak about the inception of the Ransom Center, its history, its place and relationship on the U.T. campus and with the LBJ Library; the "chase" (the securing of collections); the reasons for certain collections; and the future of libraries.
Dr. Staley has written or edited 13 books on James Joyce, Italo Svevo, modern British women novelists, and modern literature in general. His critical articles on a wide range of subjects have appeared in journals in this country and abroad. He has been the chairman or co-chairman of four international James Joyce symposia in Dublin and Trieste and is a board member and former president of the James Joyce Foundation. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Trieste in 1966 and again in 1971. Staley has served on a number of editorial and educational boards, including Twentieth Century Literature, Journal of Modern Literature, the International James Joyce Foundation, and the Christopher Isherwood Foundation. He also served on the Board of Advisors of the Library of America for 5 years.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. At 6 p.m., Mr. Updegrove will welcome attendees and former Library Director Harry Middleton will introduce Dr. Staley. A reception in the Great Hall will follow the presentation. Tickets will not be mailed. Please bring your current Friends membership card to the event for admittance. Those without membership cards will be directed to the membership desk onsite.
The Auditorium is located on the lower level of the LBJ Complex. Access to the Auditorium is through the south entrance of the building located by the LBJ Library Fountain. Please park in the visitor parking lot (lot #38); the other parking lots have changed and are now open to those with University permits only.
