An Evening With Dr. Sergei Khrushchev

An Evening With Dr. Sergei Khrushchev, 6 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2002, LBJ Auditorium

As the son of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Dr. Sergei Khrushchev had a unique viewpoint on the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now, an American citizen and a senior research fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies, Khrushchev will offer that unique perspective during the October "Evening With" lecture.

He writes extensively about the history of the Cold War and the turning points in the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Khrushchev, Eisenhower and Kennedy periods. From 1958-1968, Dr. Khrushchev, a winner of the Lenin Prize, participated in the Soviet missile and space program, including work on cruise missiles for submarines, military and research spacecraft, moon vehicles and the "Proton," the world's largest space booster.

He is the editor of his father's memoirs and has also authored Khrushchev on Khrushchev; Nikita Khrushchev: Crisis and Missiles; The Political Economy of Russian Fragmentation and Three Circles of Russian Market Reforms. His latest book, Nikita Khrushchev and the Creation of a Superpower, was released in 2000. Dr. Khrushchev has agreed to be present to autograph this book during the hour before the lecture. A reception will follow in the Library and Museum's Great Hall.
