Dear Friends,

Next week Joe Klein of TIME will join us to share his recent cover story "The New Greatest Generation," an inspiring look at how members of the military are using their leadership skills to better our nation. Three of the young veterans profiled in the article will join him on stage.

Please also mark your calendar for an evening program with seasoned journalist Bill Keller of The New York Times on October 6. Invitations will be mailed shortly.

I hope you will continue to invite your friends and colleagues to become members of the Friends as well. We are excited about the year to come! For a complete list of fall programs, please visit the Friends events page online or see page 3 of the recent edition of Among Friends.

All the best,

Mark K. Updegrove

An Evening With Joe Klein
Please join us on September 14 for an evening with TIME columnist and author Joe Klein. Klein will discuss his recent cover story "The New Greatest Generation" on how American soldiers are using the leadership skills they have honed in combat in remarkable ways. He will be joined on stage by three of the veterans mentioned in the story.

Joe Klein's weekly column for TIME, "In the Arena," covers the Middle East, presidential politics, and elections, and he is a regular contributor to TIME.com's political blog, "Swampland." In 1996, Klein anonymously wrote the critically acclaimed novel Primary Colors, based upon the 1992 presidential race. Prior to joining TIME in 2003, he wrote about politics for The New Yorker, Newsweek, and New York magazines.

An Evening With Bill Keller
President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Elementary
On October 6, we invite you to join us for a conversation on the evolution of The New York Times - specifically, how the iconic news organization is adapting to the changing times. Bill Keller, the paper's former executive editor, will talk about journalism in an era of nonstop news, the new definition of competition, the possibilities and perils of collaboration, the truth about WikiLeaks, and what to expect after the Times launches their digital metered model. Evan Smith, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of The Texas Tribune, will moderate the conversation. This program is co-sponsored by The Texas Tribune. Invitations will be mailed shortly.

Until this month, Bill Keller served as the executive editor of The New York Times. He will now write regularly for the Times as an Op-Ed columnist. He joined the paper in 1984 and has since served as an Op-Ed columnist and senior writer for The New York Times Magazine, managing editor, foreign editor, chief of the Times' bureau in Johannesburg, and as a domestic correspondent in the Washington bureau.

An RSVP is required to attend. Please return the postcard enclosed with your invitation or email your response to friends@lbjlibrary.net by September 29. Please bring your membership cards for admittance; your membership card will serve as your ticket. The doors will open at 5:15 p.m. Members may bring a guest for a fee of $10 each. A reception will follow the program. Free parking is available in the Library visitors' lot (#38), and lots #37 and #39 after 5:00 p.m.
