Dear Friends,

Please read below for the latest news from the Library, including details for our first Evening With of the fall, with conservative commentator Margaret Hoover. Invitations will be mailed this week.

Please note the dates for other upcoming events at the Library below, including our namesake's birthday on August 27. In early September, you'll receive the next issue of Among Friends with details on these and more programs.

All the best,

Mark K. Updegrove
Director

Please join us on September 1 at 6:00 p.m. for a conversation and booksigning with Fox News contributor Margaret Hoover. Her new book American Individualism: How a New Generation of Conservatives Can Save the Republican Party was published on July 19. The great-granddaughter of President Herbert Hoover, Ms. Hoover served as Associate Director in the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs in the George W. Bush Administration and has aided in two presidential campaigns.

Targeted at the most perplexing problems of the twenty-first century, American Individualism offers provocative ideas not just for reinvigorating the Republican Party but also for strengthening America in the decades ahead.

Copies of American Individualism will be sold outside the Auditorium beginning at 5:15 p.m. Ms. Hoover will be available to sign copies of the book purchased from the LBJ Museum Store. To pre-order, please call the Museum Store at (512) 232-2396. Books are also available for purchase online.

An RSVP is required to attend. Please return the postcard enclosed with your invitation or email your response to friends@lbjlibrary.net by August 25. Please bring your membership cards for admittance; your membership card will serve as your ticket. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Members may bring a guest for a fee of $10 each. A reception will follow the program.

On July 1, the LBJ Library unveiled a new statue of President Johnson, titled "Art of Persuasion: A Portrait of Lyndon Baines Johnson." The statue is based on a photo taken on October 17, 1967, during a televised White House press conference. At the press conference, aides placed a small microphone around the President's neck, freeing him from the podium and enabling him to "act as the vintage Johnson the public rarely saw" according to Harry Middleton in his book LBJ: The White House Years. "Aides are delighted, but he never repeats the performance, fearing it is not sufficiently 'presidential.'"

"Art of Persuasion" is a mixed media, life-size sculpture by Austin artist Joshua Krezinski. The sculpture was produced by Blue Genie Art Industries of Austin. The Library has a hands-on policy regarding the statue; visitors are encouraged to take photos and enjoy a close look at the 36th President as they exit the Library.
