On July 1, the LBJ Library unveiled a new statue of President Johnson, titled "Art of Persuasion: A Portrait of Lyndon Baines Johnson." The statue is based on a photo taken on October 17, 1967, during a televised White House press conference. At the press conference, aides placed a small microphone around the President's neck, freeing him from the podium and enabling him to "act as the vintage Johnson the public rarely saw" according to Harry Middleton in his book LBJ: The White House Years. "Aides are delighted, but he never repeats the performance, fearing it is not sufficiently 'presidential.'"
"Art of Persuasion" is a mixed media, life-size sculpture by Austin artist Joshua Krezinski. The sculpture was produced by Blue Genie Art Industries of Austin. The Library has a hands-on policy regarding the statue; visitors are encouraged to take photos and enjoy a close look at the 36th President as they exit the Library.
