Dear Friends,

With classes now back in session at U.T. after a quiet summer, the campus is humming, and so is the LBJ Library.

Here are some upcoming events that you won't want to miss:

  • On September 9, filmmaker Rory Kennedy joins us to screen her documentary about the border fence.
  • A week later, on September 16, CBS News correspondents Morley Safer and Lesley Stahl will share their memories of their mentor Walter Cronkite and discuss their work on 60 Minutes.
  • Finally, on September 19, I hope you'll join us for an afternoon of family activities for Austin Museum Day.
Details on each of these events can be found below or on the Library website.

As always, I look forward to seeing you.

All the best,

Mark K. Updegrove
Director

An Evening With Rory Kennedy
Please plan to join us on September 9 at 6:30 p.m. for An Evening With Rory Kennedy. In conjunction with HBO Documentary Films, Austin Film Festival, and The Texas Observer, the LBJ Library invites you to a screening of her thirty-five minute documentary The Fence, followed by a discussion with Producer and Director Rory Kennedy and Producer Keven McAlester. Professor, historian, and bestselling author Douglas Brinkley will moderate the discussion.

In October 2006, the United States government decided to build a 700-mile fence along its Mexican border. The Fence investigates the impact of the project, revealing how its stated goals - containing illegal immigration, cracking down on drug trafficking, and protecting America from terrorists - have given way to unforeseen consequences.

A reception will follow the discussion. Auditorium doors will open at 6:00 p.m.; the Library will have extended hours until 6:00 p.m. so attendees may view the special exhibit on Walter Cronkite beforehand. An RSVP is required in order to attend; tickets are no longer available. Parking will be available in the Library visitors' lot (#38) and Manor Garage. Please visit the detailed event website for more information.

The LBJ Library and The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History will present An Evening With Morley Safer and Lesley Stahl on September 16 at 6:00 p.m. In recognition of the special exhibit CRONKITE: Eyewitness to a Century, the CBS correspondents will share their personal memories of Walter Cronkite and discuss his influence on their journalistic careers.

Safer joined CBS News in 1964 and has served as a correspondent for 60 Minutes since 1970. Prior to joining 60 Minutes in 1991, Lesley Stahl served as CBS News White House correspondent, moderator of Face the Nation, and co-anchor of America Tonight.

A reception for Friends members will follow in the Great Hall. An RSVP is required in order to attend. Please email your RSVP to friends@lbjlibrary.net as soon as possible, as seating is limited. No guests will be allowed for this program. Parking will be available in the Library visitors' lot (lot #38) and lot #37 (the adjacent lot to the south). Please visit the detailed event website for more information.
