Links for the Friends

Dear Friends,

As you likely know by now, our new special exhibit on the life and legacy of legendary newsman Walter Cronkite, created in partnership with the Briscoe Center for American History, opens later this month. Hopefully, we'll see you on May 14 at our program featuring Bob Schieffer, who worked alongside Cronkite at CBS. You'll have a chance to preview the exhibit before the program that evening.

I also hope to see you on May 26, as we screen For Love of Liberty, a stirring new documentary honoring the remarkable contributions of African Americans throughout U.S. military history. The evening will feature a panel discussion with the film's director and producer as well as Colonel Krewasky Salter and Dr. Betty Moseley Brown, who will discuss the film and elaborate on some of the remarkable stories it tells.

All the best,

Mark K. Updegrove
Director

CRONKITE: Eyewitness to a Century
Presented by the Briscoe Center for American History and the LBJ Library & Museum, CRONKITE: Eyewitness to a Century will open to the public on May 15 and run through January 3, 2011.

As one of the nation's preeminent journalists, Walter Cronkite's broadcasts brought virtually every major news story of the last half of the twentieth century to the American people, with the legendary integrity, accuracy, and devotion to the larger ideals of journalism that made him one of the most respected public figures in the country.

CRONKITE: Eyewitness to a Century is the first exhibit to explore his influence and perspective on some of the most crucial moments in history, including D-Day, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and the nascent and heady days of the space race. The exhibit brings Cronkite's personal and professional experiences to life, featuring never-before-seen items from the Briscoe Center's collections.
