Links for the Friends

Dear Friends,

The following highlights the events we have coming up this month. On April 8, we'll feature an Evening With Jack Goldsmith, who will speak on "The Second Terror Presidency: Obama's Embrace of the Bush Counterterrorism Program." The program relates to a symposium we will co-host on the 9th and 10th at the U.T. Law School on executive power.

Later in the month, on the 16th, we'll team up with the CIA for a symposium on the lessons the agency learned from the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Finally, you can visit us on our newly redesigned website - LBJLibrary.org - which has been improved for usability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Like these newsletters, it will provide the latest on all that's happening at the Library.

Happy spring and all the best,

Mark K. Updegrove
Director

An Evening With Jack Goldsmith
On Thursday, April 8, please join us in welcoming Harvard Law School professor and author Jack Goldsmith to the LBJ Library. Goldsmith will serve as the keynote speaker for a symposium on "Executive Power" co-sponsored by the LBJ Library and The University of Texas School of Law. His presentation will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the LBJ Auditorium.

Professor Goldsmith will speak on "The Second Terror Presidency: Obama's Embrace of the Bush Counterterrorism Program," discussing President Obama's approach to executive power. Copies of his book The Terror Presidency, which recounts his experiences as Assistant Attorney General in President George W. Bush's administration, will be available for sale and signing prior to the program. Guests may place advance orders with the LBJ Museum Store by calling (512) 232-2396.

A reception for Friends members will follow the presentation. Please RSVP by returning the postcard enclosed with your invitation or by emailing friends@lbjlibrary.net. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Please bring your membership cards for admittance.

Symposium on the Czech Invasion of 1968
On April 16, Friends members are invited to attend a symposium co-hosted by the CIA and the LBJ Library titled Strategic Warning and the Role of Intelligence: Lessons Learned from the 1968 Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia. Speakers include Admiral Bobby Inman, former CIA Deputy Director; CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence Peter Clement; Ambassador Robert Hutchings (who is also the new Dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs); and experts from The University of Texas and the Bush School at Texas A&M University. The symposium is scheduled from 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the LBJ Library's Atrium, with a reception to follow.

As part of this event, the CIA's Historical Collections Division, working with the LBJ Library, has put together more than 500 formerly classified documents and other historical material highlighting the role intelligence played in informing U.S. policy regarding the Soviet-Czechoslovak crisis that took place over forty years ago. A DVD containing the documents will be provided to all attendees, and the collection will be made available to the public on the CIA website. To highlight the document release, the symposium will feature scholarly discussion on the intelligence support provided to the Johnson Administration and on the lessons that can be drawn from the 1968 invasion for strategic warning and the role of intelligence in today's world.

Please visit the events page on the Library website for a schedule, full list of panelists, and biographies. The symposium is free and open to the public but advance registration is required. Please email friends@lbjlibrary.net if you plan to attend or with questions.
