Links for the Friends

Dear Friends,

As we announced several weeks ago, new Library Director Mark Updegrove will start this month. We look forward to welcoming him.

I hope you will join us and other members of the Friends for a reception on October 14, to celebrate Mr. Updegrove's arrival and the opening of our new exhibit, School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents. I hope you will also share our excitement about the recent announcement that the LBJ Library archivists have been nominated for the 2009 Archivist's Award presented by the National Archives and Records Administration. Finally, Friends are invited to join us on October 31 as the Library and the Texas Book Festival present Taylor Branch's The Clinton Tapes. Please read below for more details.

Sincerely,

Tina Houston
Interim Director

Opening Reception
Members of the Friends of the LBJ Library are invited to a special reception on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m. for the new exhibit School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents. Friends will also have the opportunity to meet new Library Director Mark Updegrove.

Our modern Presidents received educations and participated in school activities in ways as diverse as their backgrounds and political philosophies. Through the records of the presidential libraries - archival material, museum objects, photographs, and audio-visual recordings - School House to White House gives visitors a new perspective on the presidency. The exhibit, prepared by the National Archives and Records Administration, charts the educational experiences of our Presidents from Herbert Hoover to Bill Clinton. Visitors will learn which sports the presidents played, what kind of homework and grades the presidents were given, how classrooms were organized, and family involvement in their learning experiences. The exhibit opens October 10, 2009, and closes on Presidents' Day, February 15, 2010.

There will not be a formal program. Friends are invited to enjoy the exhibit and reception at their leisure. Light hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served in the Great Hall.

Please email your RSVP to friends@lbjlibrary.net by October 6 to indicate your attendance. Tickets will not be mailed. Please bring your current Friends membership card to the event for admittance. Those without membership cards will be directed to the membership desk onsite.
LBJ Library Archivists to be Honored
Archivists at the LBJ Library have been nominated for the 2009 Archivist's Award for their diligent work in opening President Johnson's telephone conversations to the public. The last of the conversations were released in December 2008.

Deputy Director Tina Houston, Supervisory Archivist Claudia Anderson, and Senior Archivist Regina Greenwell are traveling to Washington, D.C., to represent the Library at the awards ceremony later this fall.

Former Library Director Harry Middleton sent a congratulatory message to the Archives, saying, "How very satisfying it is that the National Archives has recognized the importance of the tapes - and more, acknowledged the valiant work of all those on the staff who have worked so long and so faithfully on the project. I wish you would convey my congratulations to every person who has had a hand in this monumental effort which has brought such great credit to the Library and its reputation."

The LBJ Library and the Texas Book Festival will feature Taylor Branch's The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President at 1:00 p.m. in the House Chamber at the Capitol Building on Saturday, October 31. A book signing will follow immediately afterwards at the Texas Book Festival's Book Signing Tent at 12th & Colorado.

Revered historian Taylor Branch's The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President rests upon a secret project, initiated by Clinton, to preserve for future historians an unfiltered record of presidential experience. Branch is also the bestselling author of Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-63, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Paul Stekler, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and professor at The University of Texas, will introduce Branch in the session.

Branch's presentation is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in four nearby parking garages. Please click here to visit the TBF website for parking locations and maps of parking garages and the Capitol Building.
