Dear Friends,

As some of you may know, I announced my resignation as Director of the LBJ Library several weeks ago. I have enjoyed very much getting to know you through the Friends program and hope to see you again before my departure in late May.

We have several exciting programs coming up this spring - please read about our Science Fiction Film Fest below, and stay tuned for more announcements soon!

Sincerely,

Betty Sue Flowers
Director

Library Director to Step Down
Dr. Betty Sue Flowers, Director of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum since 2002, is leaving that post effective May 22, 2009. "After seven wonderful years at the LBJ Library and Museum, I have decided to move on to other adventures and opportunities," Dr. Flowers said. "It's been such an honor and pleasure to serve as the director of this flagship presidential library, and I'm sure I would have been happy to continue serving into the indefinite future. But it's always been my philosophy that it's good for an institution to adapt to new leadership-and for a leader to face new challenges."

Initiatives launched during Dr. Flowers' tenure at the Library include the Presidential Timeline, a web-based resource that opens to the public the rich archives of historical documents and artifacts from the nation's presidential libraries; the continued release of recorded phone conversations from the Johnson administration; activities commemorating President Johnson's 100th birthday; the tribute to Lady Bird Johnson; and repair of the LBJ Plaza at the Library and Museum.
Sci-Fi Film Fest
On Friday, March 27, enjoy an evening under the stars at the LBJ Library. Between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., tour the LBJ Museum's exhibit To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s. From 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., the Rock-it Scientists will provide live music on the lawn by the fountain. Amy's Ice Creams will generously provide ice cream (one per ticket). At 8:00 p.m., Alamo Drafthouse will screen The War of the Worlds, the classic sci-fi film of 1953, on a large inflatable screen on the lawn. Bring your family and friends for a night of free entertainment! You are encouraged to bring a sack dinner. No alcohol allowed. Costumes optional. The LBJ Museum Store will remain open until 7:30 p.m.

The following day, come back to the Library for a triple-feature! We will be showing sci-fi classics in the theatre on the 3rd floor: 10:00 a.m. - Forbidden Planet; 1:00 p.m. - When Worlds Collide; 3:00 p.m. - Earth vs. Flying Saucers.

Tickets for Friday evening will be distributed in advance and at the door while they last. Tickets will be available at the LBJ Library Information Desk from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day beginning March 18; limit 4 per person. The band and movie will be set up on the LBJ Library lawn next to the fountain. Free parking is available in the LBJ Library parking lot (lot #38). Please click here for a map.
