Dear Friends,

Thanks for sharing an unprecedented year with us. In addition to celebrating Johnson's life and legacy in what would have been his 100th year, we opened a new exhibit on the space program and finally re-opened the LBJ Auditorium after years of renovation. In 2008, over 257,000 people visited the Library and Museum to enjoy our permanent collection, our special space exhibit, and two unique art exhibits.

As always, we will be taking advantage of the quiet summer months to organize and plan a wonderful next year for you and our guests.

Sincerely,

Tina Houston
Interim Director

Season Wrap-Up
This year has been particularly exciting for members of the Friends of the LBJ Library. We kicked off the season in August by celebrating Lyndon Johnson's Centennial with a barbeque, live music, raffle, and more on the lawn. Over the course of the year we hosted an award-winning producer, a Constitution expert, a Lincoln scholar, and a nationally-recognized economist. Additionally, three of Johnson's trusted former staff shared their memories with the Friends. Thanks to Harry Middleton, Robert Hardesty, and General James Cross for reminiscing with us! Finally, we ended the year with our first Evening With back in the newly-renovated LBJ Auditorium. Next year we will enjoy hosting our Evening With events at "home."

Along the way, Friends also enjoyed a number of special Centennial and space-related programs, including a panel discussing America's Return to the Moon with astronaut Alan Bean, symposia on LBJ's foreign and domestic policy, and a remarkable evening with the Apollo 8 astronauts and crew.

On April 13, 2009, the Harry Middleton Lecture featured best-selling author and respected journalist Tom Brokaw on Lessons from the Greatest Generation. The lecture was held in the LBJ Auditorium and was open to students and the general public.

A webcast of Mr. Brokaw's remarks is now available on the LBJ Foundation website. Please click here to view the full lecture.
Honoring our Vietnam Veterans
Luci Johnson and Ian Turpin are hosting a fundraising event in their home this evening, June 2, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. to help build a monument on the grounds of the Texas Capitol to honor the brave men and women who served in Vietnam. From Luci: "If you could support this important cause, whether you can come or not, that would be our greatest honor. We so hope that you can help us remember those veterans who have so nobly remembered our country."

For more information about the evening please contact Lauren Honeycutt of JHL Company at (512) 236-1001 or Lauren@jhlcompany.com. To learn more about this important effort, please visit www.buildthemonument.org.
