Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! 2009 will be another full year at the LBJ Library and Museum. Our renovated auditorium, new classrooms, and the Lady Bird Johnson Plaza are scheduled to be completed this spring. Evening With programs have been scheduled for January, February, March, and June. We will continue to host public programming to celebrate and promote our space exhibit, To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s. Next fall, a new exhibit on education and the Presidents will open.

Please read below for two special programs this month.

Sincerely,

Betty Sue Flowers
Director

An Evening With Ambassador Peter Galbraith
On January 29, Ambassador Peter Galbraith will join us to discuss constitutional design, particularly the Iraqi constitution. Galbraith served as the first U.S. Ambassador to Croatia and has held senior positions in the U.S. government and the United Nations. In his most recent book, Unintended Consequences: How the War in Iraq Strengthened America's Enemies, Galbraith takes advantage of his vast knowledge of the area to critique the U.S. occupation of Iraq and suggest alternate policies. Mr. Galbraith's presentation is the keynote lecture for the Library's joint symposium with The University of Texas Law School on Constitutional Design January 29-31, to which you are also invited. More information about the symposium is posted on the events page on the Library's website.

This program will be held in the Lone Star Room at the Frank Erwin Center on January 29 at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Great Hall at the LBJ Library. Mr. Galbraith will sign copies of Unintended Consequences purchased in advance from the LBJ Museum Store. Books will also be sold and signed at the reception at the Library following the program. For details, please call the Museum Store at (512) 232-2396. Members of the Friends receive a 15% discount on purchases.

Invitations are in the mail. Please register by emailing friends@lbjlibrary.net or by returning your response card.

Mrs. Johnson's Office Re-Opens
In honor of Mrs. Johnson's birthday on December 22, the LBJ Library & Museum held a press conference and ceremony to re-open Mrs. Johnson's office. Because of construction, Mrs. Johnson's office has been closed to the public for fifteen months. Now, repairs on that portion of the Library are complete, and visitors may once again enjoy Mrs. Johnson's office and the spectacular views of her beloved University of Texas, city of Austin, and the hills beyond. The office is exactly as Mrs. Johnson used it for over 25 years with its original desk, furniture, photographs, and working materials.

On what would have been Mrs. Johnson's 96th birthday, her granddaughter, Nicole Nugent Covert, cut a ceremonial ribbon and officially opened the office to visitors again. Betty Tilson described objects in the office and regaled us with stories of working with Mrs. Johnson in this special space. At the White House, Tilson worked as head of the Social Correspondence Office. In January 1969, Tilson began working for President Johnson. After his death, Tilson became Press Secretary and Assistant to Mrs. Johnson. Some of Mrs. Johnson's former staff members also attended the ceremony.
