Dear Friends,

Classes have resumed, football season is underway, and fall is right around the corner. From hosting new students of the LBJ School to kicking off another year of Friends programs and opening a new exhibit on LBJ's Senate career, the Library is a beehive of activity.

Please read below about all of the exciting activities happening at the LBJ Library and Museum. We hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Betty Sue Flowers
Director

New Exhibit Open
Bills, Bills, Bills: Lyndon Johnson as Senate Majority Leader, a new exhibit at the LBJ Library and Museum, opened to the public over Labor Day weekend. The exhibit covers Johnson's entire Senate career from his election in 1948 to his election to the vice-presidency in 1961, chronicling his rapid rise to power from a slim margin of victory in 1948 to his selection as Majority Leader in 1955.
Upcoming Friends Event
Save the date for our next Friends program! On Wednesday, October 10, Harry Middleton will moderate An Evening With A White House Diary celebrating the re-publication of A White House Diary.

Originally published in 1970, A White House Diary is Mrs. Johnson's intimate, behind-the-scenes account of Lyndon Johnson's presidency from November 22, 1963, to January 20, 1969. Beginning with the tragic assassination of John F. Kennedy, Mrs. Johnson records the momentous events of her times, including the Great Society's War on Poverty, the national civil rights and social protest movements, her own activism on behalf of the environment, and the Vietnam War.

On October 10, we have invited a select group of Johnson friends and family to tell their own behind-the-scenes stories about the events Mrs. Johnson describes. Bess Abell, Jim Ketchum, Liz Carpenter, Elspeth Rostow, Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Robb will join us on-stage for story-telling and conversation.

Advance copies of A White House Diary signed by both Lynda Robb and Luci Baines Johnson will be sold at the event on October 10 and in the LBJ Museum Store beginning October 11. This event will be held in the Connally Ballroom at The University of Texas Alumni Center, followed by a reception. Invitations will be mailed soon.
Featured Item in the LBJ Museum Store
The LBJ Museum Store is now selling reproductions of the "Can Do" paperweight found on the desk in Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson's office. President Johnson surrounded himself with people who were resourceful, go-getter types. For his staff, the ultimate compliment would be to have the President say you were a "Can Do" person. The Chinese characters on the reverse of the paperweight refer to the ancient Chinese idiom: "When someone acquires the discipline of learning, then doing the work comes easily."

This green marble paperweight is available in the Museum Store or online. Friends members, please remember to ask for your members' discount!
