Dear Friends,

The LBJ Library and Museum and the Johnson family are receiving national attention this fall. On September 17, the Department of Education building in Washington, D.C., was formally renamed to honor LBJ's commitment to education. This month, University of Texas Press will re-issue Mrs. Johnson's A White House Diary, and the LBJ Library will be featured on C-SPAN in a new series on presidential libraries. Please read below for more details!

Sincerely,

Betty Sue Flowers
Director

Education Building Dedicated
On September 17, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings honored President Lyndon Baines Johnson in a ceremony officially renaming the U.S. Department of Education building at 400 Maryland Avenue, S.W. in Washington, D.C., as the Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building.

"President Johnson worked tirelessly to provide an equal education to all children," Secretary Spellings said. "Having his name on the Department of Education building is a daily reminder to all Americans that his goal is now our duty to pursue and achieve."

Members of the Johnson family and Board members of the LBJ Foundation were on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Upcoming Friends Event
On Wednesday, October 10, Harry Middleton will moderate An Evening With A White House Diary celebrating the re-publication of A White House Diary, Mrs. Johnson's intimate, behind-the-scenes account of Lyndon Johnson's presidency.

We have invited a select group of Johnson friends and family to tell their own behind-the-scenes stories about the events Mrs. Johnson describes. Bess Abell, Jim Ketchum, Elspeth Rostow, Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Robb will join us on-stage for story-telling and conversation.

Advance copies of A White House Diary signed by both Lynda Robb and Luci Baines Johnson will be sold at the event on October 10 and in the LBJ Museum Store beginning October 11. This event will be held in the Connally Ballroom at The University of Texas Alumni Center, followed by a reception. Tickets have been mailed.
LBJ Library to be Featured on C-SPAN
Presidential Libraries are the focus of a new presidential history series on C-SPAN. As the nation prepares to elect a new president in 2008, Presidential Libraries: History Uncovered will offer a "behind the scenes" look at the modern American presidency, featuring experts and historians, and never-before-seen resources from the National Archives' twelve Presidential Libraries. Each live, two-hour program on location from one of the Presidential Libraries will include archival materials, interviews, and viewer call-in segments with respected experts such as curators, archivists, historians and other "witnesses to history." Live segments will take viewers where the public cannot go -- into the archives of each library where rare artifacts are preserved.

As part of the series, C-SPAN will be filming a segment at the LBJ Library and Museum on October 12. The live, two-hour program will air on C-SPAN from 7-9 p.m. on October 12. Plan to watch and learn more about the Library and its treasures!
