Pocket watch

This week's artifact is pocket watch (1971.4.19) owned by Sam Ealy Johnson Sr. and Sam Ealy Johnson Jr., LBJ’s grandfather and father.

LBJ was known to give away Hamilton watches that had been inscribed with his initials and the "golden rule" — Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Then & Now

Did You Know…

In their book LBJ: To Know Him Better, Dr. J. Willis Hurst and Dr. James C. Cain share anecdotes about their relationship with Lyndon Johnson, who was not only their president but their patient. In one reflection, Dr. Cain, Johnson's cardiologist, describes a visit to the Texas ranch. As they said goodbye, LBJ presented his friend with a Rolex watch, along with instructions to have it engraved with a personal message. LBJ died not long after that visit.
