A fan from the Sultan of Bamoun, Cameroon

This week's artifact is a fan (1964.27.2) presented to the First Lady from the Sultan of Bamoun of Cameroon. G. Mennen Williams, the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, brought this back to Lady Bird after a 1964 trip to Africa.

G. Mennen Williams was heir to the name and fortune of the Mennen Company, founded by his maternal grandfather. Because the company manufactured toiletries, Mennan was known to his friends by the nickname "Soapy." After earning a law degree at the University of Michigan and then serving as Governor of Michigan from 1948-1960, Williams was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs by President Kennedy, a position he held until 1966. read more
