A Successful Museum Field Trip
Before Your Trip
Visit the Plan Your Visit page for general information on Library hours, parking, and directions.
Trip Check List
- Review your reservation confirmation letter for date, time and program.
- Instruct your chaperones.
- Plan a restroom stop before starting the trip.
- Call bus transportation or driver(s) to ensure departure times. If you are running late, please call and we will try to adjust our schedule: (512) 721-0184.
- Review museum manners with students and chaperones.
Student Information
Some students, particularly those who are very young, may not have previously had the opportunity to visit a museum or an exhibit. To maximize students’ learning while viewing the exhibit and visiting the museum, advance preparation before coming to the Library will help them anticipate what to look for once they begin their visit. Using the introductory materials and orientation video which will be sent to you, inform and discuss with students the purpose of the trip and objectives to be achieved. Give them prior knowledge of your expectations regarding their behavior. Afterward, additional activities and experiences will reinforce what they have seen and heard.
Museum Manners
- Remove caps and hats when entering the museum.
- No touching of objects or leaning on displays is allowed.
- Students stay with assigned chaperone and the docent guide.
- Food, drink, candy, or chewing gum must be left outside the museum.
- Photography is allowed without flash. Video is allowed without additional lighting.
- Out of consideration for other museum visitors, speak in low voices.
- Turn off all cell phones.
- Listen to the docent, but ask questions if you need more information.
Chaperone Information
Chaperone instruction is very important. What are your expectations of them? How are they to deal with uncooperative students? The Library requests that you inform chaperones of these expectations prior to your visit:
- One chaperone for every ten (10) students is required.
- Chaperones must stay with their assigned groups at all times.
- Chaperones are responsible for discipline and are asked to remove any disruptive student(s).
- Remind them that the tour is for the students; side conversations are disruptive and inappropriate.
- They are requested to follow any instructions given by museum staff, docents, or security personnel.
- Turn off all cell phones.
Special Needs
It would help if you would make advance arrangements for students/adults with special needs (Braille text, hearing impaired, wheelchair, crutches, etc.). The museum will make every effort to provide an interpreter for monolingual Spanish-speaking individuals; please advise the tour coordinator at least a week prior to your visit by calling (512) 721-0184.
After Your Trip
Reinforce what has been learned by using materials and suggestions provided in the museum education packet which will be sent when your reservation is received.
