The Harry Middleton Fellowship was created to support scholarly work in Presidential studies and to recognize Harry Middleton's contributions to the Presidential library system. Harry Middleton was a speechwriter for President Johnson and later served as director of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library & Museum from 1972 to 2002. While Middleton Fellows will be able to conduct research at any Presidential library or other facility in the National Archives and Records Administration system, they must conduct a portion of their research using the collections of the LBJ Library & Museum in Austin, Texas. Post-doctoral fellows may apply, but preference will be given to doctoral candidates whose dissertation research highlights how history can illuminate current and future policy issues.
The Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation ("LBJ Foundation") will award one $5,000 Middleton Fellowship for the Fall term and one for the Spring term each year. Please note that the minimum amount awarded for the Middleton Fellowship is $5,000. A larger amount may be awarded when special circumstances, such as international travel, warrant it. Grant periods are June 1 through December 31 for the Fall term and January 1 through August 31 for the Spring term. Grant applications for the Fall term must be received by March 15; recipients will be announced by the end of May. Grant applications for the Spring term must be received by September 15; recipients will be announced by the end of November.
Prior to submitting a Fellowship proposal, applicants must contact the Archives department at the LBJ Library, 2313 Red River Street, Austin, Texas 78705 (001-512-721-0212 or johnson.library@nara.gov), to obtain information about materials available at the LBJ Library on the proposed research topic. In preparing a request for funding, applicants should note that the Library Reading Room is open for research Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is closed on Federal holidays (click here for a list of Federal holidays). Applicants should include information about which other National Archives facilities they plan to visit and the materials available for research on their topic at those facilities.
Applications are reviewed by a special Faculty Committee appointed by the President of The University of Texas at Austin at the request of the LBJ Library. An application form is required (see links below).
