The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum is one of thirteen presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The library houses forty five million pages of historical documents which include the papers from the entire public career of Lyndon Baines Johnson and also from those of close associates. The museum features permanent, traveling, and special exhibits centered around the life and times of President Johnson. Free Admission President Johnson insisted that the library bearing his name be available to all. It is the only presidential library that does not charge admission.

Visitors to the Museum

Permanent Exhibits & Events

The museum provides year-round public viewing of its permanent historical and cultural exhibits. Special activities and exhibits are sponsored privately by the Friends of the LBJ Library and its parent organization, the The LBJ Foundation.

Featured Exhibits

The museum presents traveling exhibitions related to American history in its changing exhibition gallery. Documents and artifacts included in these shows are on loan from other institutions and private collections nationwide. Special exhibitions that are produced in-house are shown in the same space.

Special-Needs Visitors

The museum is handicapped-accessible with elevators in the central lobby. Transcripts for the hearing-impaired, Braille booklets, and wheelchairs are available at the lobby information desk. Closed-caption video presentations provide text in English and Spanish.

The Museum Store

This presidential specialty shop offers original campaign items along with a selection of books, gifts, and souvenirs.

Researchers

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library was established to preserve and make available for research the papers and memorabilia of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. In addition, the Library actively collects the papers of Johnson's contemporaries and conducts an oral history program designed to supplement the written record.

Before Making Travel Plans

Researchers planning a visit should notify the Supervisory Archivist of their research topic and travel plans as far in advance as possible. Prospective researchers are strongly encouraged to contact the Library for information about materials available on their topic. Upon arriving at the Library, each researcher will be briefed by an archivist on Reading Room procedures and relevant holdings. It is preferable to arrange an appointment time with the interviewing archivist prior to arrival. Copies of the Library’s list of holdings and guides to specific topics are available upon request and are available, in part, on our web site.

Researchers should also read the Information for Researchers page for important Library policies and procedures.
